BARNSLEY girl Melissa Hibbert has been crowned Alternative Model of the Year and landed a modelling contract after beating off stiff competition from 100 others.

Melissa, 30, came out on top at the final in Newcastle after taking to the catwalk with different coloured hair, piercings and tattoos.

She said: "It's the first time I've entered anything like this, I genuinely couldn't believe it. I didn't win my age category and never thought I'd win the whole thing."

Melissa sailed through the first audition, where she had to model with a prop - an umbrella - and then had to describe herself in one word and model that word.

Following her win, Melissa is looking to build up her portfolio and plans to organise a fundraiser for the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, which was set up in memory of Sophie who was beaten to death for being a goth in 2007.

"I would just say to anyone if you want to do something, go for it and be yourself," Melissa added.
