THE Yorkshire Military Band is calling on young people to join its Corps of Drums after a grant of £1,200 enabled it to purchase six new marching drums.

Mayor of Barnsley Coun Linda Burgess went along to the band’s rehearsal at Darton College on Wednesday night to officially present the new drums, which cost £275 each, and were purchased thanks to a grant from the Darton West Ward Alliance, of which Coun Burgess is a member.

Director of music Louise Lingard-Snape said: “We’re incredibly grateful to the ward alliance, and to Coun Burgess for coming along to see us.

“She has been extremely supportive of the band, and even turned her hand to conducting the band, which I think we all enjoyed.”
