JO Newing has been elected as a new councillor to represent the Old Town ward.
Coun Newing took the seat with 548 votes, beating Gavin Felton, the Democrats and Veterans Party candidate, who bagged 338 votes.
Clive Watkinson, contesting the seat for the Conservatives, came third with 157 votes.
Kevin Bennett, of the Liberal Democrats, came fourth with 124 votes while The Yorkshire Party's Tony Devoy (47 votes) and the BNP's Christopher Houston (25 votes) completed the standings.
The swift by-election was prompted by the resignation of Coun Anita Cherryholme.
