THE new Barnsley Market hall has officially opened, marking a major milestone in the new multi-million pound redevelopment of the town centre.

A celebration was held at the weekend and the official opening was attended by the council’s chief executive Diana Terris, council leader Sir Steve Houghton, mayor Coun Steve Green, and MPs Dan Jarvis and Stephanie Peacock.

The markets had been temporarily housed in May Day Green and Market Parade, but moved in to the Glass Works on Friday, with the official opening on Saturday.

The new Barnsley Market mascot, Veggie, was also there, along with several celebrity look-alikes including Gordon Ramsay.

Coun Green said there had been a really positive ambience, which he hoped would continue.

“It’s fantastic. I can remember going to Barnsley Markets in the 1970s and thinking how fantastic it looked. But it was outdated. The transformation has moved the town forward and I’ve heard nothing but positive comments from the traders and the people who have been in.

“The introduction of new market traders means there are even more things we can buy off the market. I can safely say I can buy everything I need off Barnsley Market.”

Council leader Steve Houghton thanked traders and customers for their patience.

He said: “It’s another milestone in the regeneration of the town centre, and an important one because we said the market would be at the centre of the regeneration and we’ve shown that’s the case.

“There’s still a lot of work to do over the next two years, but nonetheless it is a great start. A big thank you goes to all the traders and to the people of Barnsley for their patience in getting here. We’ve got lots more to look forward to.”

The market cafes are preparing to move into Market Kitchen later this month with more details on the move and flagship food court to be announced soon.

The regeneration also includes new retail, restaurants, Cineworld, Superbowl UK and Library @ the Lightbox, and a new landmark public square.

Barnsley MP Dan Jarvis said: “It is exciting to see the regeneration of our town centre now starting to take shape with the opening of the new market.

“Since 1249, visitors have been drawn to Barnsley’s Market and independent retail offer. I hope that people from across the region and further afield will take the opportunity to visit and see the incredible transformation for themselves.

“I want to thank all those who’ve worked hard to create our new market and ensure that the tradition of Barnsley as a historic market town will continue for the next generation.”
