A NEW custody suite will be built at Barnsley police station to bring it up to government standards.

Planning bosses have approved plans for a new building to replace the existing 24-cell suite which is no longer fit for purpose and doesn't conform to current Home Office guidance.

Paula Ibberson, custody estates project manager for South Yorkshire Police, said the new suite in Barnsley forms part of a £19m project to improve custody facilities across the county and is expected to save £1.2m every year - the majority of which will come from removing posts as staff retire.

It is thought work will start sometime between October and March 2016.
