THE first college course in the country set up especially for the survivors of modern slavery began this week with 14 students signed up.

Northern College said it expected to attract about ten students when it announced its Free Thinking Programme earlier this year but in the end 14 signed up and began the course on Wednesday.

The pilot scheme for students who have experienced significant trauma through modern slavery and human trafficking is a ten-week residential programme designed to help students gain confidence and skills to live, work and study in the UK.

If successful it is hoped funding can be secured to continue the course long-term.
