FORGET cats stuck up trees - it is ducklings down a drain which a Barnsley fire crew saved this week.

Firefighters from Tankersley station’s White Watch rescued the family of five from a drain on Maple Street, Tankersley, on Tuesday morning.

They responded to a call from a member of the public who spotted the tiny ducklings, which had become stuck more than a foot from the surface in the drain.

The firefighters were dispatched to the rescue by station manager Delroy Galloway.

After the rescue, there was no sign of their mother, so the crew brought them back to the station where they were picked up by the RSPCA.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Animal rescues make up part of the thousands of ‘special service’ incidents that crews attend each year and highlight that firefighters contribute far more to local communities than simply putting out fires.”
