IT’S THE final curtain call for a Penistone musical society which was founded in 1922.

After months of deliberation and having to cancel their annual musical, Penistone Centre Stage Musical Society is to fold.

The group, previously known as Penistone Operatic Society, was due to present Calamity Jane in March, but a lack of lead singers and other problems meant the show had to be cancelled.

Spokesman and long term member, Eileen Mellor, who has been with the society for more than 50 years, said: “We are devastated to take this move but it is no good throwing good money after bad.

“We only have ten acting members, although general membership is higher than this.

“We can’t put on a show, which has always been well supported with good audiences, without enough people to take up the roles and chorus.

“It is a very sad day. Long term lead actor/singer and producer, Barbara Marshall would turn in her grave if she knew it had come to this.”
