PERCY Turner's pork pies have been named the nation's best in a national guide to pies.

Author Martin Tarbuck has travelled the length and breadth of the country and tasted more than 400 pies in writing his book Life of Pies but has decided the Jump butcher's pies are the best.

"I thought the traditional Melton Mowberry ones were very nice, but I prefer the hot pies you get in Yorkshire," said Martin, of Wigan.

Percy Turner's pies have won various accolades and praise over the years.

Percy, 69, was born in the shop his father opened in 1937.
