A SWEEP of town centre hotspots where truant kids are known to gather during school hours has been carried out by police and education officers.

The joint patrol targeted the transport interchange, Cheapside, Mandela Gardens and the Alhambra Centre during a school day earlier this month.

The aim was to stop and challenge parents with school-age children and unaccompanied children to raise awareness of the importance of school attendance.

In total, 20 pupils were stopped and challenged over their reasons for not being in school - 12 were primary age and eight were secondary age.
