SPIT guards will be used by South Yorkshire Police at custody suites, including the one in Barnsley.

The guards protect police officers and staff from being spat at and bitten, and are used by 22 of 43 forces across the UK.

SYP will start training staff on use of spit guards next month.

The guards are medically certified, and made from a sheer, lightweight, net-like material with a reinforced section around the mouth and jaw to prevent the detainee from spitting or biting.

A guard will only be used by trained officers on a detainee who has already spat or threatened to do so.

On average, a member of SYP staff is spat at once a day, but it is thought incidents of this nature are underreported.

Deputy Ch Con Mark Roberts said: “Spitting on or at an officer is an assault. Our staff should be able to come to work and do their job without being assaulted.

“The introduction of spit guards will offer a safe and practical barrier to protect our officers.

“A spit guard will only be used when absolutely necessary, following verbal warnings where the detainee will be informed that a spit guard will be used, should they continue with such behaviour.”

From March, access to spit guards will be rolled out to staff while transporting prisoners.
