A PRECIOUS document relating to the life of engineer Joseph Locke has been acquired at an auction in Edinburgh and brought home to Barnsley.

The illuminated scroll was bought for £560 and the money used to purchase the important artefact was raised by the Friends of Barnsley Archives.

The document was produced by the College of Arms in 1847, formally granting Joseph Locke the right to a coat of arms. It arrived in its original Victorian box, stamped with the initials of Queen Victoria.

The dedicated Friends group, which was founded in 2002, works hard to promote Barnsley’s archives discovery centre, based in the town hall and part of the Experience Barnsley Museum.
