RESIDENTS were out in force on Thursday to protest against the closure of the last bank in Royston.

Royston TARA (Tenants and Residents Association) set up a petition after discovering that the bank would be shutting its doors on November 12.

A spokesman for NatWest's Royston branch said the closure was due to fewer people using the branch for transactions since the introduction of mobile and online banking.

The spokesman reassured customers that the bank had made an agreement with the Post Office in the village to allow customers to withdraw cash and check balances for free.

Dan Jarvis, MP for Barnsley Central, attended the protest outside the bank with local residents and councillors.

Dan said: "This branch is at the heart of the Royston community, providing much-needed services for local people, businesses and organisations."Many of my constituents remain in the dark about why this branch is closing.

"It's clear to me that the NatWest have fallen short when it comes to consulting with the local community about this closure."It is deeply disappointing, given that the NatWest's four point customer charter pledges 'to put customers' needs first, to make banking easier, to be there whenever customers need help, and to be fair and honest.'"
