An 11-year-old boy has been selected to join the Yorkshire Crown Green Bowling squad.

Samuel Farmer, of Lock Street, Barnsley, is the third generation of his family to take part in the sport.

His father, Ian, 46, and grandfather Barry, 71, both enjoyed playing bowls.

The Shawlands Primary pupil already plays for Outwood WMC in Wakefield and in junior and senior teams in Sandall and has been selected to play for Yorkshire under 18s' team.

Barry, of Cockerham Lane, said: "He is the youngest by quite a few years and it's quite unusual for them to want him at that age.

"They see the potential in him and the manager said they wanted to take him so he will get used to the travelling and so it's not such a culture shock."

Samuel travelled to Cumbria with the team as a reserve and will next month travel to Lancashire.

Barry and Ian both played for Locke Park and Barry said Samuel would go along to watch them play.

"He loves it. Sometimes you can't get him away from the green. I think he likes playing against adults and he gets some good results.

"He's very good at it, his hand and eye co-ordination is excellent."
