SAVVY stallholders on Barnsley Market are being hailed as the new face of 21st century market trading for using social media to boost business.

An increasing number of Barnsley's open market traders, particularly fashion retailers, have taken to Facebook and Twitter to connect with customers and keep them up to date, in real time, with offers and new stock.

One of them is Claire Swallow, 33, who runs The Closet Queen.

She says because her market pitch moves around, having a Facebook page means she can let people know when and where she is going to be.

Town centre services manager, Anne Untisz, expects more market traders to embrace social media.

She said: "It shows market traders are really pushing all new technology to make their businesses a success."
