BRASH supercars usually command a lot of attention - but a Royston man’s prized possession turns everyone’s heads.

John Frewer, of High Street, bought a GAZ-66 - a former Czech army off-road military truck which used to be a scud missile support truck - two years ago.

The 54-year-old’s vehicle has been fully restored since then - and he has even converted its 4.3-litre V8 engine to run on LPG to slash its eye-watering running costs.

“That’s significantly improved its appetite for fuel,” John, a surgeon at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, said. “I love the thing and have no intention of ever selling it.

“It was a Cold War vehicle in 1968 but in the 1980s it was imported by RJB Mining Company of Doncaster, and then loaned for display by the Imperial War Museum at Duxford.

“It was going to be scrapped a few years ago but it’s been lovingly restored to what it is today and it now spends its time at shows. I drive it to them, though, so it’s used regularly.

“Everyone stops in their tracks - even dogs who appear to be quite a fan of the noise it makes.”
