LOCAL photographer John Crossley will showcase his snaps of modern Barnsley with a yesteryear twist at an exhibition at The Civic.

Entitled Barnsley’s Past In The Present, the collection of work includes images of familiar town centre spots including Cheapside, Barnsley Town Hall, The Arcade and Peel Square.

Many of the images hark back to a time of horses and carts and cobbled streets, before the rise of the modern buildings that now make up the town.

In his collection, Crossley juxtaposes archival photographs of Barnsley in days gone by with those of the present day, creating instantly recognisable yet somewhat otherworldly images of two worlds colliding.

John’s mission is to try and build up an archive of Barnsley as it is now so town residents have something to look back on in years to come.

He said: “Many times I have walked past a long gone building or place that’s gone through a major redevelopment, changed beyond all recognition and wished someone could have spent the time to photograph it so we can look back and enjoy how it used to be.

“It doesn’t cost much to get started, just a love of photography, old buildings and Barnsley.”

The exhibition opens on April 28 and is open until June 9.
