PROPOSALS to roll out student travel passes for all 16 to 18-year-olds are expected to be given the go ahead by transport bosses when they meet next week.

The discounted travel pass allows 16 to 18-years-old to use buses and trams throughout South Yorkshire for 80p, as well as half price train travel.

Under the existing concessionary scheme - provided by South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive - the yearly passes are only available to 16 to 18-year-olds in full time education.

The plan is to replace this with a new two-year pass available to all 16-18 year olds regardless of their education status.

If approved, it means young people in apprenticeships and employment - which are not covered under the current scheme - will be able to apply for the discounted travel pass and for the first time the pass will be extended for 16 and 17-year-olds so that it is valid during August, rather than expiring in July.
