A Brierley primary school teacher has raised £1,000 for Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice after a week-long trek along the Great Wall of China.

Alison Hartley, 52, returned to Brierley Church of England School this week. "It was absolutely fabulous," she said.

"In terms of the experience it was very difficult and it was very hot. To say the least my knees are a little sore."

Alison walked about 65 miles over the seven days on different sections of the wall. She said some parts were well-built but others were a little more precarious, with 18 inch wide ledges to negotiate.

She decided to raise money for the hospice as her son, Simon has already given a lot to the cause by organising an annual music festival in Rotherham.

Simon started Bean Fest four years ago after his friend Rob Crook died in a car crash aged 23.

Alison said Rob's family wanted other parents to be able to say goodbye to their children in a dignified way, hence their reason for supporting the hospice.

Children in Alison's class also helped out collecting coins to stick on their Great Wall of China display to raise funds.
