THIEVES ransacked a community centre causing more than £1,000 of damage and stole more than £400 from a junior football club’s funds - threatening the club’s future.

The Lew Whitehead Centre, on Genn Lane at Ward Green, was broken into this week when takings from its tuck shop and subscriptions were stolen from a locked tin inside a locked cupboard.

The money had been saved up to spend on trophies for an end of season presentation, and on plans to expand the club with a second team next season.

“They’ve trashed the whole place, it’s absolutely heartbreaking,” said Ian Langworth, chairman of the centre, and also chairman of the Ward Green Warriors FC.
