A TRADE union has waded into the row about a Grimethorpe care home’s imminent closure.

UNISON moved to criticise Bupa Care Homes this week, the owner of Hall Steads, after the Chronicle revealed that the 90-bed unit - which specialises in dementia support - will be axed.

Staff have been placed on three months’ notice by Bupa, who cited ‘low occupancy levels’ as the reason for the closure after the provider conducted an internal review at the Stacey Crescent facility.

Lorraine Fitzsimons, area organiser for UNISON Yorkshire and Humberside, said: “Public services are shrinking all over the country while needs are increasing. This is another example of the reduction of local care services for elderly and vulnerable people.”
