SHOPPERS at a discount food store in Tankersley had to be taken into the shop through a staff entrance after travellers set up camp on the customer car park.

The illegal encampment turned up to Company House, on Wentworth Way Industrial Estate, late Tuesday night. Reports on social media said there were several caravans on site and horses had been seen grazing on grass verges.

It’s understood in order to minimise disruption to trade, staff directed shoppers to the staff car par and escorted them through the staff entrance into the store.

The travellers had gone by about midday on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Company Shop said: “The store was open as usual on Wednesday and we thank all of our colleagues for helping to ensure that members were able to park and access the shop.

“Our visitors were given notice to leave, but then voluntarily cleared the site ahead of that deadline.”
