A CONSULTATION is being launched to ask residents and businesses for their views on the town centre Public Spaces Protection Order.

The order, introduced two years ago, gives the council and police additional powers to tackle low level antisocial behaviour.

The current PSPO expires in March 2019 and is due to be reviewed before it can be extended.

Coun Jenny Platts said: “The Public Spaces Protection Order we introduced in 2016 has been effective in helping us achieve a notable reduction in antisocial behaviour in the town centre.

“It is important to stress that the PSPO, if approved, will continue to not be used as a punishment and we will always offer the appropriate help and support for underlying issues to those who need it.”

The public consultation will run until Sunday December 9, and may lead to new conditions being added to the PSPO based on which issues are marked as being of most concern to residents and businesses.

Coun Platts said: “We want the views of as many local people as possible to help form the future of the PSPO to keep the town centre vibrant and make it a safe place to live, work and visit.

“Feedback from the consultation will be analysed and used to inform the decision about how to progress the PSPO and make sure it is fit for purpose for the years to come.”
