A VILLAGE landmark considered one of the finest buildings of its time is being torn down.

Demolition of the the iconic Butchers’ Arms in Monk Bretton, which stood proud at the corner of Judy Row and High Street for more than 200 years, began on Saturday and is expected to be complete this weekend.

A planning application is still under consideration for the site, but the council confirmed the owner of the pub appointed a contractor to start the demolition in order to avoid a S79 notice, which is served by the council when a building is considered detrimental to the neighbourhood and must be pulled down.
