The library at Monk Bretton could be moved into a former social club, once it has been refurbished.
The library, on Lamb Lane, is in need of expensive repairs and is not easy for disabled visitors to use.
The council is proposing to retain the library service, but not in the existing building and a consultation with local people about the proposals has been held.
People were given two options, moving the library to the former Redfearn's social club or having a mobile library make visits to the village.
They were told that a smaller library to the current one could be at Redfearn's Sports and Social Club which would provide a range of books for adults and children to borrow and would continue to run activities such as the summer reading challenge.
The second option consists of mobile library stops being introduced across Monk Bretton providing access to CDs and DVDs which would visit every three weeks.
Coun Margaret Sheard said all libraries across Barnsley were under review, but it was impossible to predict the outcome of the consultation.
She added: "We're looking at transferring Monk Bretton to Redfearns, which is now owned by Priory Campus.
"They are going to do the building up and will have room for a library and other facilities.
"We're waiting for the results of that consultation and will know more about the general feeling once we have the results.
"We will then be able to move forward."
A spokesman for the council said the consultation was held as the authority considered where to make savings cuts.
The consultation period ran from December 1-21 and the results will be used by councillors when making their decision on setting the council budget for the next financial year.
This will take place in February.
