A ‘CLICK and collect’ service is being set up for Barnsley’s independent traders in a bid to revive the high street by helping local businesses compete with major retailers and supermarkets.

Barnsley Council is backing a six month trial of ‘ShopAppy’, a dedicated website that provides an alternative to supermarkets and online retailers by allowing customers to browse and buy local products online from town centre traders.

Customers who use the site can choose to either click and collect direct from the seller or pick up their goods from a town centre collection hub - the location for which is yet to be decided.

The high street revival plan was revealed at a town centre business forum on Tuesday. The idea is to bring the convenience of online shopping to a local level, and at the same time drive footfall into the town centre and win back ground from big business.

It will be launched in June and the aim is to have 70 local businesses on the website by December. About a dozen retailers have already signed up including florists, butchers, fishmongers, confectionary shops, giftware, a greengrocer and bakery.
