A DAKOTA military transport plane turned heads in Darfield as part of All Saints School gala last week.

The plane formed just part of the school’s annual 1940s-themed gala.

A throwback from the days of the Second World War, the Dakota took advantage of the clear skies and warm weather to put on a show for attendees and village residents.

Mayor of Barnsley Coun Steve Green opened the event with wife Tracey.

All Saints headteacher Courtenay Walls said: “We were very grateful to the mayor and mayoress for opening our summer fair and they seemed to enjoy themselves throughout the afternoon meeting and greeting the many people who attended.”

Approximately 400 people came along to the day.

“We wanted to make the fair a real community event and it definitely was - we loved having the residents of Thornhill House and they particularly enjoyed the George Formby tribute act,” added Mr Walls.

“We also were delighted to welcome carers of young adults with learning difficulties and to promote the Darfield Museum.

“There was a wide range of stalls, races, Punch and Judy show, balloon modelling, competitions, races, 1940s’ songs and dances by the pupils and of course three stunning low level flypasts by the Dakota - made even more special when we saw one of the crew waving out of the open door.

“It was just a fantastic event and couldn’t have gone any better - even the weather was kind. A big thank you to all who gave their time to make the fair such a success. Even a week later local residents are still commenting on what a good day it was and how incredible it was to see the Dakota over Darfield.

“Hopefully it will live long in the memories of everyone who saw it. We’re already thinking about how to make next year’s event even better.”
