Chris O'Grady is set to be unveiled as a Barnsley player next week after a £300,000 deal was verbally agreed with Sheffield Wednesday.

Talks have opened between O'Grady's agent and Reds officials and the striker is expected to sign a two-year deal when he returns from holiday on Tuesday.

Boss David Flitcroft has made no secret of his desire to sign O'Grady after the former Rochdale man impressed on loan and helped Barnsley survive last season. He scored six times in 16 appearances.

The 27-year-old has a year left on his contract at Hillsborough but spoken of his hope of joining Barnsley.

Reds director Don Rowing refused to reveal the amount of the transfer but the Chronicle understands Barnsley will pay £300,000 for the player plus add-ons.

Rowing said: "We've been talking to Sheffield Wednesday over the summer and we're getting close to getting it sorted out.

"Meaningful negotiations have taken place and they've given us permission to speak to Chris' agent and we are now doing that on a daily basis. Chris is on holiday at the moment but we are confident something can be sorted when he's back, perhaps even in the early part of next week."
