A BARNSLEY church’s bell tower is to double as a mobile phone mast in a deal that will bring more than £120,000 into church coffers - despite concerns it will mean pornography and other questionable material is transmitted via the church tower.

The grade II listed church of St Thomas and St James at Worsbrough Dale, which opened in 1859, will be the first in the Diocese of Sheffield to have mobile phone service antennae installed in its tower.

Church warden Andrew Hill told the Chronicle there had been lengthy discussions among the parochial church council and the congregation, including a certain moral dilemma.

“The biggest concern was about the availability of undesirable material that is available on the internet,” he said.
