AN AMBITIOUS plan to make Barnsley home to the first smoke free market in the country has been revealed to market traders by council officials.

Stall holders have been told the council wants to build on the success of voluntary smoke free zones in other parts of the borough by extending the 'ban' to outside areas around the market.

Locke Park and Elsecar Park were among the first places to became smoke-free in January and The Pals Centenary Square at the side of the town hall followed suit in June.

Kieron Hunt, the NMTF Barnsley branch president, said more detail of the smoke free market proposal should be known after it meets with council management early next month.

Coun Jim Andrews, cabinet spokesman for public health, said the idea and concept is in the 'very early stages' and was 'tentatively discussed' at a recent Barnsley branch NMTF meeting as an area to look at in future.
