AN Elsecar couple have started a petition to stop the village's green space from being used as an occasional car park.

Alison and Ian Stenton live opposite Gasworks Field on Wath Road and were dismayed when Barnsley Council started laying plastic matting over the grass.

The move is to allow the council to use the field 12 times a year for overflow parking. It can accommodate about 50 vehicles and is designed to ease congestion from popular weekend events at Elsecar Heritage Centre.

But Mr and Mrs Stenton, whose family have lived on Wath Road for five generations, say the matting makes the field less usable for children playing football or learning to ride bikes.
