The crews - who cover full time firefighters when they are on strike - say they have received letters from chief fire officer James Courtney to say the retainers which are paid to them to be on call, have been cut from £500 per month to £1,000 per year.

And one contingency fireman, who has provided cover in Barnsley for almost three years, said if the chief doesn’t relent, he will quit.

He added: “We’ve attended house fires in Barnsley, crashes on the motorway - it’s not something we have been practising, we’ve actually been doing it.”
