A FLY tipping horror story has sounded alarm bells for a small parish council.

A Chronicle story spotlighting the dumping of huge amounts of rubbish at Grimethorpe could lead to action being taken around Ingbirchworth.

Council chairman David Edmondson was shocked by the report which suggested the tipping could be the borough's ‘worst ever’.

“We need to give serious thought to what would it would mean if something like that happened to us,” he told the last meeting.

He said even small pockets of land could be used to dump tonnes of waste.

“To a small parish council such as ours, the cost of removing such waste would be horrendous,” he said.

“We would almost certainly be looking at a four-figure sum.”

Ward councillor Andrew Millner suggested putting bollards or concrete blocks around any sites thought to be vulnerable.

And he added that Ward Alliance funding might be available for deterrent schemes. A resident at the meeting suggested soil tip banks grassed over to block access points.
