A FUND-RAISING campaign in memory of a postman who died from motor neurone disease raised almost £3,000 for research into the killer condition.

John Phillips, 69, of Ryecroft, Smithies, died just two months after he was diagnosed last year.

His widow Sheila and his sister Elaine Cooke organised a charity bag-pack at Quality Save, a race night at New Road Club, and a sponsored walk which collectively raised £2,824.14.

Elaine said: “We were all really pleased to raise so much, I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who supported us in all three events.”

The sponsored walk included five-year-old Layton Phillips. He shares a surname with Sheila but is no relation and didn’t know the family, but lives near Elaine and heard about the fund-raising effort and wanted to get involved.
