VORACIOUS knitter Margaret Riley has made 1,500 poppies in the past 12 months to help raise money for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.

Margaret, 82, of Saunders Row, has been manning a stall at Morrisons Cortonwood selling the poppies.

She said: "It has taken 12 months and two sets of needles but I have managed it. It has been my own personal marathon.

"I just want to thank everyone who has bought a poppy, from friends to family to Morrisons customers.

"All I kept thinking was at least if I get fed up, I can stop. The soldiers couldn't."

Margaret said she lost her husband Kenneth three years ago after caring for him for 12 years due to a heart attack and a series of strokes.

She said the Royal British Legion was of great help and support to her, as Kenneth had served his national service in Germany and Austria during the aftermath of the Second World War.
