MAJOR highways work which resulted in months of delays for motorists may have come to an end - but so-called improvement works have only made things worse, it has been claimed.

The scheme, which started on Pontefract Road in February, saw Barnsley Council widen a footpath from Oakwell to the town centre, aiming to provide walkers and cyclists on the nearby Trans-Pennine Trail with a safer route along the busy road and encourage more people to visit the town centre.

But Tom Molyneux, of Oakwell Motorhomes, whose business is on Pontefract Road, told the Chronicle the works have done little more than cause a potentially fatal accident.

“There’s been so many accidents since the work was finished because they have widened the footpath but narrowed the road’s width,” Tom said. “That appeared to be fine at first, but there’s little in the way of signage on the path so cyclists continue to use the road.”
