Barnsley Mayor Coun Ken Richardson helped launch the South and West Yorkshire 2013 Poppy Appeal.
He presented the first poppy to launch the Royal British Legion's South and West Yorkshire County poppy appeal at Barnsley Town Hall last Friday.
He presented the first poppy in the Barnsley Pals Centenary Square at the side of the town hall, which was named in August in memory of the Barnsley Pals service personnel lost in World War One.
The service included a performance of two special remembrance hymns by 30 children from Littleworth Grange Primary School. The mayor and mayoress presented each of the children with a poppy. Members of the Barnsley Metropolitan Band accompanied the service, led by the mayor's chaplain Rev Barry Lowery.
• Barnsley will be hosting a number of remembrance activities during November. On Thursday at 7pm it is the Royal British Legion Barnsley branch's 'Festival of Remembrance' at Horizon Community College.
There will be a service of Remembrance led by the mayor at the war memorial on Sunday, November 10 at 11am.
The following day on Monday, November 11 at 11am it is Armistice Day and the mayor will mark a two minute silence accompanied by members of the Royal British Legion, representatives from veterans associations and 270 children from Summer Lane Primary School.
