A METAL supplier has signed a £10m agreement with a developer to relocate to Barnsley.

Sheffield firm William Rowland signed with Barmston Developments, which is a joint venture between Wilton Developments and Clugston Estates, to acquire land and build the facility at Enterprise 36, near the M1 at Birdwell. The new venture will see the company move from its current venue in Meadow Street, Sheffield, to a new 6.5-acre site. The firm has operated from its current site since 1870 is one of the oldest metal trading businesses in the UK.

Richard Lowe, managing director for William Rowland said: “It was critical we removed the obstacles to our continued growth and put ourselves in a position to help our customers and suppliers grow their businesses.

‘’In selecting the site, we had to consider our strongest asset (employees) first, as without them we cannot provide the outstanding levels of expertise and service our customers are accustomed to.

“We wish to become an employer of choice, and whilst we are renowned for service and stability, a modern place of work will help with that.’’

Major works to modify junction 36 of the M1 at Birdwell were funded with the intention of opening up the surrounding area to investment and growth in jobs.

Coun Roy Miller said: “We’re delighted that the company has chosen to expand to Barnsley and look forward to supporting their future growth. Their decision to move to the borough is great news, and we welcome the new opportunities this will bring to our local jobs market and Barnsley’s economy.”
