A SHOPPING street once dubbed the jewel in Barnsley's retail crown is hoping to shine once more after being given a new name which celebrates its heritage.

Retailers on the Arcade in Barnsley town centre have banded together to promote the street, starting by changing its name to the Victorian Arcade.

The cobbled arcade is home to 36 independent shops, including cafes, a jeweller, record shop, bakers and barbers.

Roger Foulstone, whose grandfather Tom set up Tom Foulstone's menswear shop in 1929, is excited about the new plans.

"This is the first time since I have been here that something looks like it is actually going to happen," said Roger.
