BEDDING plants have been stolen from a war memorial garden, just two weeks before the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Approximately 100 plants have been uprooted from the garden, on Old Pit Lane, Brampton, which surrounds the village memorial to soldiers lost fighting in the First World War.

The site is one of a number across Brampton maintained by local volunteers Don Keating and Pete Hart. Both are ex-servicemen who invested time into restoring the memorial, with advice from the War Graves Commission and help from Brampton Parish Council.

On Tuesday last week, the pair planted 12 trays of donated flowers in the garden. But last Friday morning, when Pete passed the garden on his way to the shop, he noticed that all of the planted flowers had gone missing.
