POLICE investigated reports of a man allegedly acting suspiciously around schools in Royston last week.

Meadstead Primary School urged vigilance to parents in a message posted on its Facebook page after reports came in from Parkside Academy.

It said: "As some of you may be aware there have been letters sent home from the other village schools regarding strangers acting suspiciously in our area.

"We please ask you all to be super vigilant and alert us if you feel that anyone is acting out of the ordinary so we can report it to the authorities. We will be educating the children on 'stranger danger' all this week."

Insp Simon Leake, from South Yorkshire Police, added: "When members of the public report information like this, it is important for us to quickly assess how the information impacts on the safety of the community.

"I am satisfied that at this stage this information does not point to evidence of wrongdoing. It is important for us to work with local schools in spelling out clearly to young people the dangers of contact with strangers.

"It is also important for South Yorkshire Police to be visible, to reassure and deter people from criminal behaviour. I would continue to encourage schools and communities to report such matters to us."
