POLICE have allayed residents' fears that the number of officers on the streets will be reduced as cost-cutting measures described as the 'biggest change to local policing in years' come into force from Monday.

Royston and Cudworth's Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be reshuffled as part of countywide changes in a bid to slash £8.1 million from the police budget.

Residents in Royston and Cudworth have expressed concern at the plans, claiming not enough is being done as it is to clamp down on petty crime and that the measures will exacerbate the problem.

But Ch Con David Crompton says the changes will actually mean more police officers will be on hand to deal with local matters and has moved to ease residents' fears.
