MORE than £2,500 has been raised for Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support by two runners who took part in the Great North Run.

Katie Cadwell, 54, from Kexborough, started running two years ago.

Her mum Brenda, had enjoyed visiting BIADS dedicated dementia centre to take part in activities. Brenda died in November, and Katie’s father, Brian Peel, still attends the centre to keep in touch with the friends he has made. Katie raised £2,000.

Completing the run for the fifth time was Leanne Kitching, 39, of Lowe Street, Gilroyd. Her family has also been affected by dementia.

Leanne’s employer G4s agreed to match the total raised through its employee sponsorship programme, and the total was £500.

Emma Atack, BIADS development manager, said: “What Katie and Leanne have achieved is fantastic. Everyone at BIADS, including members, wish to say a huge thank you to them both and everyone who donated. The money raised will go towards ensuring our dedicated dementia centre remains open, and that we continue to support those living in Barnsley whose lives are affected by dementia.”

Donations can still be made via BIADS’ Just Giving page.
