A former Arctic convoy seaman has been awarded an Arctic Star service medal, as recognition for his service during the Second World War.

Ken Burkinshaw, 89, of Cherry Tree Street, Elsecar, was awarded his medal by MP Michael Dugher at the Hoyland library.

It follows last year's government announcement that the veterans who braved the treacherous conditions would finally be awarded medals for their dedication.

Ken served aboard the HMS Sheffield when he was only 16 and served between 1940 and 1957, in which time he achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

During his time on board, he completed nine trips to Russia in minus 40 degree temperatures to deliver supplies.

Mr Dugher said: "I am delighted to have presented the Arctic Star to one of Barnsley's veterans. It is thoroughly well deserved and this recognition is scandalously overdue."
