OVER the summer holidays last year when most children were out playing in the sunshine, two children were knee-deep in a pond clearing it of rubbish.

Their selfless action has been recognised and they have been nominated for a Young Champions Award under the Community Hero category.

Willow Barr, eight, and her brother Parker, six, spent three days over two weeks in August clearing out the pond at Cross Street Park, Monk Bretton, which had become full of rubbish.

The siblings decided to clear it along with their grandmother Nancy Wainwright, who lives on the street and their mother, Eleanor-Rose Barr.

She said: “The children didn’t like seeing the litter in the pond and they worked incredibly hard to clear all the rubbish out.

“They loved watching the pond become cleaner and when everything was out the look of pride on their faces was priceless.

“I am so pleased to hear that they have been recognised for their actions and I am incredibly proud.”

If you know some young champions who deserve recognition, nominate them today here.
