SPECIAL measures have been taken at RSPB Old Moor after huge groups of starlings have been literally stopping traffic.

Barnsley bird recorder Carl Dixon, 26, of Clayroyd, Worsbrough Bridge, said the winter roost of starlings grew to an estimated 25,000 last month and called it a ‘fantastic number’ for Barnsley.

He said starlings gather in pre-roost flocks and perform spectacular aerial displays, with the swirling mass of birds creating many different shapes in the sky.

The term ‘murmuration’ is given to a flock of starlings performing in this way.

The aerial displays are so spectacular, drivers on the nearby Dearne Valley Parkway have been pulling over for a glimpse.
