A COUPLE who opened up a coffee shop to help settle their adopted son have now expanded and set up another venue to cope with demand.

The Old George coffee shop, which is based on Market Hill in Barnsley town centre, this week launched its second shop - on the two-year anniversary of its first shop opening - in the old town hall cafeteria on the opposite side of the road.

Gareth Derbyshire and partner Andrew McCulloch opened up the Old George back in February 2017.

The pair regularly visited coffee shops with their son but found they were travelling to Leeds and Sheffield in search of different places to try, so they decided to open up their own place.

But now due to the Market Hill shop only having a limited capacity, the pair have expanded and now trade from the town hall.

“We were looking for another venue and we struggle with capacity so the town hall is good and complements what we’re already offering,” said Gareth.

“We’ve done lots of things inside we’ve had benches and booths made. It has an old canteen feel to it but we’ve got rid of that and made it into a softer environment.

“We’re doing fresh food and things on toast, it’s not going to be a full menu but nice simple things with takeaway options.”
