ROYAL British Legion stalwart Aubrey Martin-Wells has died at the age of 90.

Aubrey, of Summer Lane, Barnsley, organised the town’s Festival of Remembrance for 20 years up until 2015 and was a former president of the Churchfield branch of the RBL.

He had spent a week in an RAF Association rehabilitation centre following a bout of illness recently with his wife, Ann, but died on Tuesday night.

Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis paid tribute to Aubrey and condolences have flooded in for the popular figure, who was originally from London.

“Aubrey was a wonderful character; decent, good humoured and utterly selfless,” Dan added. “He was also a tireless champion of our veterans and a leading light in the Barnsley RBL. He will be greatly missed.”

Aubrey, who was notoriously independent and had even driven down to Brighton by himself to see his sister earlier this year, came to Barnsley as a postmaster following his RAF career.

Goff Griffiths, from the Churchfield branch of the RBL, added: “That was how Aubrey was - he was determined and very independent. He even fixed his roof a few years ago by using a ladder, no scaffolding.

“He had watched the Blitz in London as a youngster and that was what pushed him into the RAF as he’d watched them overhead.

“He was much-loved in the legion and across the borough and although he had been poorly, the news of his passing still came as a shock.”
