THE outcome of an investigation in to the murder of a Royston teenager has been delayed until October, angering her mother who claims she now has no way of contacting police directly about the case.

Lindsey Scholes died in a house fire on Milgate Street, Royston, in September 2001. The fire was started deliberately when white spirit was poured through the letterbox.

Lindsey's two friends survived, one by jumped out of a bedroom window, but Lindsey was too scared and remained inside. Next month will see the 16th anniversary of her murder, for which nobody has ever been caught.

In August last year, South Yorkshire Police announced a specialist team would be reviewing more than 25 cases across South Yorkshire including the Barnsley cases of Lindsey, Vera Cooper, Lily Stephenson, Wendy Gallagher and Brian Metcalfe. The team was created in October last year, two years after an identical squad was axed.

In May, the Chronicle revealed how the team was continuing to review reams of evidence to identify 'further investigative opportunities'.

But Lindsey's mum, Jackie Meloy, 55, of Queensway, Royston, said she has now been left in the dark. She said: "They came out to see me when it was announced they would be looking into these cases, and told me it would be done by June or July.

"But I rang CID to speak to my family liaison officer, to be told she isn't my family liaison anymore and I can't have another one because the case is not active. "Lindsey's review should now be done by October. They are supposed to be working on it at the moment.

"They (the police) keep saying I have to understand that there are new murder cases coming in, and I feel sorry for those people. But they have not got to the bottom of what happened to Lindsey.
