ALFIE Spurr has been playing cricket since the age of five - and at nine, he has been chosen to represent Yorkshire in the sport.

Upperwood Primary Academy pupil Alfie debuted as part of Yorkshire Cricket Club’s under nines Tykes team on Monday.

He was chosen after taking part in a pro-coaching course, which is run in conjunction with the club, and impressing them with his performance.

As well as being a landmark in his cricketing career, it was a special moment for his family too.

Granddad Melvin Spurr is Darfield Cricket Club’s chairman and he says Alfie has grown up surrounded by the sport.

Melvin said: “He started playing with a hard ball at six or seven which is quite young - but he has always played three or four years above. He came through with us at Darfield and we pay coaches to make sure we have the best for the kids. All my sons have played and from a year old, all he ever saw was cricket. But he will still want to be playing football in the winter.

“It is brilliant for him and we’re really proud.”
